This new 2027 Peterbilt 589 Traditional day cab is set up as a tri-axle steel dump truck for hauling construction materials. It has a 17' Heritage Steel Smooth Side dump body, a 245" wheelbase and a Platinum interior in Alpine Gray.
Engine & Drivetrain
The truck is powered by a Cummins X15 Production Series engine rated at 605 HP at 1,950 RPM and 2,050 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 RPM, governed at 2,000 RPM, with 2024 emissions. It uses the EMUX electronics architecture, and the powertrain is optimized for performance in heavy GCWR vocational applications. Typical operating speed is 70 MPH. A Jacobs compression brake is fitted, with its controls on the right-hand column. There is a 12-pin remote PTO/throttle provision in the engine bay, and PTO maximum engine speed is set to 1,400. The engine idle shutdown timer is enabled, with an ambient temperature overrule and shutdown when the parking brake is set. Engine protection shutdown is included.
The transmission is an Eaton RTLO22918B 18-speed manual with an oil-to-water cooler, a black shifter, a self-adjusting clutch and a pre-damped clutch. A dash-mounted single-acting electric-over-air PTO control is included. The driveline is a 1810 HD main shaft with one midship bearing (4.5" x .180 wall tubing) and a 1710 interaxle shaft for the tandem. The rear axle ratio is 3.91.
The electrical system has a PACCAR 160-amp brushed alternator, a PACCAR Premium starter and four Interstate 31ECL 12V batteries rated at 2,800 CCA. There is a low-voltage disconnect, a cab power disconnect switch left of the driver's seat, and a battery jumper terminal under the hood. A 110–120V immersion block heater is fitted. Engine equipment also includes a 37.4 CFM air compressor, a high-efficiency cooling system with a 2-speed fan clutch for frequent start/stops, and a PACCAR fuel/water separator with an extended service interval, fuel heat and a 12V filter heater. Air intake uses 15" premium stainless steel cowl-mounted air cleaners with slotted stainless caps and an increased air filter full indication.
The exhaust is a dual single-module DPF/SCR mounted under the cab on the right side. It exits through chrome-plated 7" steel standpipes (in place of 5"), 36" high, with clear coat and 45-degree cut curved tips. The DPF regeneration switch has the stop position removed.
Chassis & Axles
The frame uses 10-3/4" steel rails to 354" with 3/8" rail thickness. It has a full steel inner liner, zinc-coated anti-corrosion treatment, aluminum crossmembers, heavy-duty iron front spring brackets, and a square end of frame with a steel crossmember. The wheelbase is 245", cab-to-axle is 145.1", back of cab to end of frame is 202.5", and front axle to back of cab is 99.9". Maximum grade rating is 6%. Engineering ratings are GAWR front 20,000 lbs, first intermediate 20,000 lbs, second intermediate 23,000 lbs and rear 23,000 lbs. GVWR is 80,000 lbs and GCW is 80,000 lbs.
The front axle is a PACCAR FX-20 steer axle rated at 20,000 lbs, with a 4" drop and wide track. Steering is TRW TAS85 dual-gear power steering with a frame-mounted reservoir and cooler.
The rear axle is a Dana Spicer D46-172 tandem rated at 46,000 lbs, with heavy-wall housings and a drive axle lube pump. It has a tandem differential lock with speed interlock, plus a separate dash control for full-lock traction. Bendix Smart ATC traction control and an SBM valve are included.
The pusher is a Hendrickson EXS20 self-steering axle rated at 20,000 lbs, spaced 50" ahead of the forward drive axle, with its own air tank. Its lift regulators and switches are tie-strapped to the rail, with gauges in the dash. When lifted, the axle stows low to maximize body clearance.
Every axle has Bendix air disc brakes: ADB22X on the steer and tandem drive axles, and Hendrickson air discs on the pusher. Hubs are PHP10 iron Preset+ on the steer and pusher axles and PHP10 aluminum Preset+ on the drives. Dust shields are fitted, and all axles run synthetic lubricant. The truck also has a 6S6M anti-lock braking system and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The air system has a Bendix AD-HF EP air dryer with heater, coalescing filter and extended purge. There are pull cords on all air tanks and nylon chassis hose. Tanks are polished aluminum outside the frame rails plus aluminum tanks under the body. A self-returning dash-mounted brake hand valve is plumbed to all service brakes. Body connections are 5' back of cab, and there is a 7-way socket at the end of the frame.
Fuel is carried in polished 26" aluminum tanks: 80 gallons on the right and 50 gallons on the left, with polished straps. The left side has a small heavy-duty 14-gallon DEF tank with a polished stainless cover. The polished stylized aluminum battery box on the left side has a non-slip step with heavy-duty reinforcement. On the right side there is an aluminum non-slip cab entry step. Up front is a chromed steel Texas-style bumper with two tow points.
