Overview
This new 2027 Peterbilt 589 Traditional is a day cab tractor configured for construction and dump hauling, intended for construction materials on/off-highway service. Built with the Model 589 Legendary Package (131" BBC) with polished fenders, it's set up to pull a 53' semi-end dump trailer (36" kingpin, 2 trailer axles) and is rated for combination lengths up to 65', 102" width, and 13.5' height. Chassis dimensions include a 240" wheelbase, 99.9" FAX/BOC, 140.1" cab/axle, and 195.1" cab/EOF, with a 6% maximum grade rating and 110,000 lb GCW. Finished in black two-stage Axalta paint across the cab, hood, fenders, and frame.
Engine & Drivetrain
Powered by a Cummins X15 rated 605 HP at 1,950 RPM (governed at 2,000 RPM) with 2,050 lb-ft of torque at 1,000 RPM, 2024-emissions compliant, model year 2026 engine. Built on PACCAR's EMUX electronics architecture with the Predictive Cruise Control package and a typical operating speed of 75 MPH; powertrain is optimized for performance in vocational applications and heavy GCWR service. Backed by an Eaton RTLO20918B 18-speed manual transmission with an oil-to-water cooler and a chrome manual shifter, an SPL350 Lite HT driveline with one midship bearing, and an SPL250 XL interaxle driveline for the tandem rear axles. Equipped with a self-adjusting, pre-damped clutch, a Jacobs engine compression brake with controls on the right-hand column, and a remote PTO/throttle provision (12-pin, engine bay). Supporting equipment includes a PACCAR 160-amp brushed alternator, a 110-120V immersion block heater, a PACCAR premium starter, four PACCAR premium 12V dual-purpose batteries (2,920 CCA), a cab & sleeper power disconnect switch, a low-voltage disconnect system, a 2-speed fan clutch, an 18.7 CFM aspirated air compressor, a PACCAR fuel/water separator, heated fuel filtration (fuel and 12V heat), a high-efficiency cooling system, and 15" premium stainless-steel air cleaners with slotted caps, cowl-mounted. Exhaust is a dual SOC DPF/SCR system mounted right-hand under cab (single module), with curved-tip standpipes, 48" chrome standpipes with clear coat, 7" chrome-plated steel standpipes, and chrome exhaust pipes for the dual-exhaust setup.
Chassis & Axles
Front axle is a Dana Spicer D1321IL rated 13,200 lbs with a 3.5" drop and wide-track configuration, riding on a Peterbilt front air leaf suspension rated 13,200 lbs; steering is a Sheppard HD94 power steering unit with a frame-mounted reservoir. Front axle equipment includes PHP10 aluminum preset+ hubs, air disc brakes with pad dust shields, greasable spring pins, a dual height control valve, and Tenneco shocks. Rear axles are Dana Spicer D46-172 units rated 46,000 lbs combined (23,000 lbs per intermediate axle), running a 3.91 ratio with heavy-wall housings, a lube pump, synthetic axle lubricant, PHP10 aluminum preset+ hubs, air disc brakes with pad dust shields, and a differential lock with speed interlock. Also equipped with Bendix ESP electronic stability program (with ATC), an ABS 6S6M anti-lock braking system, a tire pressure monitoring system, and an ISO 3731 trailer ABS power connector with a 15' straight ISO cable (7-way plugs on each end). GVWR is rated 59,200 lbs with a 13,200 lb front axle load and 46,000 lb rear axle load. The frame consists of 10-3/4" steel rails (3/8" thickness) running to 354", zinc-coated for anti-corrosion protection. The fifth wheel is a Holland FW35 top plate, bolted, set 6" behind the bogie centerline, inboard-mounted on a Holland heavy-duty air slide with a 30" no-tilt-convertible slide, LH release, slide controls, and an 8.6"-9.25" mounting height; the EOF is a tapered tractor crossmember with kingpin cutout, rear mudflaps/hangers omitted, and a frame-mounted LH deck plate/access package.
Suspension
Rear suspension is a Peterbilt Air Trac rated 46,000 lbs with a 52" axle spread, a steel suspension insert rated up to 77" overhang, and air springs with internal bumpers. Includes a single leveling valve located at the forward drive axle and a dash-mounted dump switch with indicator light. The cab rides on a Peterbilt cab air suspension.
Cab & Interior
Aluminum day cab (no sleeper) with a 131" BBC aluminum hood, polished crown, and spring tilt assist, plus a SmartSound cab insulation package and Peterbilt keyless entry. Rocker panels are polished stainless steel. Seating includes Peterbilt LX premium driver and passenger seats with air ride and high-back configurations, a heated driver seat, leather driver and passenger surfaces, black seat color, red seat belts, and driver/passenger armrests. The cab features an adjustable tilt/telescoping steering column with a premium leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel (PB logo, audio and cruise controls), a Platinum interior in Alpine Gray with black floor carpet, a textured NFPA-compliant exterior cab entry grabhandle, dark window tint, a fixed one-piece glass rear cab window, a one-piece curved windshield, power door locks and window lifts, and a combo fresh-air heater/air conditioner. Exterior mirrors are heated, motorized 7"x18" stainless-steel West Coast-style units with (2) heated 8" convex mirrors mounted under the brackets, plus a black-housed look-down mirror over the passenger door and a stainless steel V-style outside sunvisor. Electronics include a 7" infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, a premium 6-speaker package with tweeters, a Uniden PC78LTX CB radio (center of header, without weatherband) with LH/RH mirror-mounted CB antennas, and global telematics hardware. Instrumentation is a 15" digital cluster display showing drive axle front/rear oil temperature, engine and transmission oil temperature, air filter restriction pressure, tractor and trailer brake application air pressure, suspension (load) air pressure, trailer reservoir air pressure, secondary fuel level, engine and PTO hourmeters, engine manifold pressure (turbo boost), and engine percent torque, with a guard fitted for the rear axle heat gauge. Additional cab equipment includes a removable bugscreen behind the grille, electric windshield wipers with intermittent feature, auto-reset circuit protection, a pull-out tray/work surface over the glove box, four additional dash switches, a triangle reflector kit, a fire extinguisher mounted outboard of the driver seat, and a variable-adjusting backup alarm (87-112 dB). Lighting includes projector-module headlights with integral turn signals, five bus-style LED marker lights, two roof-mounted round PB air horns (23"), auxiliary-light switch wiring on the dual air cleaners, and F/O beacon/strobe switch wiring at the rear sill.
Body & Equipment
The front bumper is a chromed steel Texas-style unit with two tow points. The battery box is an aluminum, stylized LH under-cab unit with a non-slip step and pad, reinforced step, and polished battery/tool box covers; the aftertreatment RH under-cab step is also non-slip aluminum. Rear lighting is an LED oval stop/turn/tail/backup unit integrated into the tractor taper EOF crossmember, with two incandescent load lights flush-mounted low inboard and an additional F/O load light with 10' wire coils under the cab. Fuel is carried in a 120-gallon aluminum tank (RH, behind cab) and a split 110-gallon aluminum tank (LH, behind cab, with 60 gallons in the split section and an additional sending unit), both polished, positioned as far forward as possible, with polished tank straps and an added threaded boss for the lower hydraulic tank. DEF is carried in a 24-gallon medium tank mounted LH behind the cab (aft of the fuel tank) at a 2:1-or-greater DEF-to-fuel ratio, with a polished stainless-steel cover. The air system includes a Bendix AD-HF EP air dryer with heater and coalescing filter (extended purge interval), pull cords on all air tanks, nylon chassis hose, polished aluminum air tanks mounted outside the frame rails, and natural-finish aluminum air tanks under the box (painted at the back of cab). Trailer air/electrical connections include chromed hose tenna fittings, BOC/BOS AE connections, 12' straight AE lines with (2) 7-way plugs, and 41-54" BOC/BOS AE connections. Exterior finish is a single-color, two-stage Axalta paint system in black, applied to the cab, hood top, cab roof, fenders, and frame.
Tires & Wheels
Front tires are 16-ply 11R24.5 HSR3; rear tires are 16-ply 11R24.5 Continental HDR2+ (8 total, tandem dual setup). Wheels are Peterbilt 98U677 24.5x8.25 high-polish aluminum, front and rear (8 rear wheels), finished with mirror-polish outer surfaces (front steer and tandem drive, without chrome wheel nuts) plus a Dura-Bright finish on the outer surface of each outer wheel.
